Is it illegal to furnish a council flat?

If you have a council flat are there restrictions on what you can do in terms of furnishing and decorating it and that?
Not basic things like the sofa, tables, dining. I wanted to change the toilet. Will that be illegal to change?

Check your lease, some councils are fine with this as long as your replacement meets their inspection standard (if it doesn't when you leave they will make you pay to put it right) but some councils require that you get permission (again the worse that can happen is when you leave they make you pay to put it back how it was) Unless there is a problem with installation and it leaks causing damage!!

It's usually no problem, but you cannot take it with you when you go. The flat will need to be in as good a condition or better when you give up the tenancy. So unless you keep the old loo and plum that back in, you have to leave all fixtures and fittings.

I think it would be easier if you asked the relevant council department. Councils are run by jobsworth people so good luck

We had to get written permission from the council to re do the kitchen in my mum's place, and we could not get rid of the old kitchen so had to find places to store it in her limited accommodation...which was ridiculous. Also the new kitchen then became the property of the council, we could not take it away when my mum passed. Mum did not receive any rebate on her rent because of the brand new kitchen (her old one was impractical and had no storage, and the council refused to do anything about it), but when the new people moved in they had to pay more rent because the flat had been modernised!

Basically, you can decorate how you like, but if you wish to make any changes to a permanent feature of the property you will have to get permission from the council/housing association.

Yes you can furnish your council flat as you wish. You might even be able to get a cash grant from your council to help you with this - no harm in asking. Just go along to the housing office and ask. Tell them you are skint or something. . . .

know what they say, don't ask, don't get. gluk

Ya can take shit like yer own couches, tables, chairs and whatnot, but as for things like sinks, baths, bogs and whatnot, I think you've gotta get the council's permission before ya change things like that in one of their properties, and that DON'T have to grant ya that permission. Peace and love! Be lucky! :)
